Afternoon Hands-on Workshops

Hands-on Workshop Leader Description
Indoor positioning Frederic Servais,
Comtech
Determining the position of a device through GPS is great but it is not always an option. Modules can be expensive, power hungry, and only works outdoors. This workshop introduces alternative positioning methods and gives a practical introduction to indoor positioning through Wi-Fi.
Bluetooth Low Energy Austin Blackstone,
Arm
It's estimated that in 2018 around 1 billion Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices will ship. That's an unbelievable number! Interested in being part of this massive market and want to learn how to develop BLE devices, join us at this workshop. This workshop will cover the basics of BLE and how to use Mbed OS to develop BLE applications.

Install BLE Scanning app on phone (LightBlue Explorer for iOS, nRF Connect for Android). Install ST Link if using windows. Install Mbed CLI (use installer links).
Introduction to Data Science Takuya Kitazawa,
Treasure Data
Gathering vasts amount of data is only part of what the Internet of Things is. How do you do something useful with all that data? This workshop introduces you to data acquisition, visualization, and running machine learning models on big data sets.
Using LoRaWAN with The Things Network Johan Stokking,
The Things Network
LoRaWAN is a networking technology that combines kilometers of range with very low power consumption, which is a perfect fit for IoT devices. And because it's operating in the unlicensed spectrum everyone can set up a network. This workshop introduces you to the worldwide community driven by The Things Network, and shows how to build and connect LoRaWAN devices.
Introduction to the Mbed simulator Jan Jongboom,
Arm
The feedback loop when developing IoT devices is slow. It requires compilation, flashing, and getting the device back into the state that you were testing. In addition, it always requires hardware, which is not always practical. Wouldn't it be great if you could test the software on a computer first? This workshop introduces you to the experimental online Mbed simulator and shows how to dramatically shorten your feedback loop.
Getting started with ARMv8-M on the Nuvoton M2351 Robert Ling,
Nuvoton
Traditionally, microcontrollers have a flat address space and no process isolation; that has changed. The new ARMv8-M architecture brings Arm TrustZone to Arm Cortex-M MCUs, allowing multiple security domains to run on the same processor. This workshop introduces you to the new security features in ARMv8-M, and gives you hands-on experience with the Nuvoton M2351, the first development board to implement these new features.
Faster to production with Sigma Delta Technologies Inc. Jiwon Yune,
Sigma Delta
Making a hardware product can be tricky. Connecting it to your web or mobile application is even trickier. This workshop introduces you to an efficient way to develop and connect your hardware products to a cloud or your smartphone, using Sigma Delta Technologies' hardware modules.
Develop managed IoT applications with Arm Pelion and NXP Clark Jarvis & Alejandra Guzmán,
NXP
How do you quickly build a secure and scalable IoT deployment? With pre-defined and well-tested blocks of hardware and software. This workshop introduces the Arm Pelion platform, which offers secure provisioning and firmware updates, in combination with NXP's platforms and tools. You'll learn how to efficiently develop and debug IoT applications with NXP microcontrollers and Arm Pelion.
Sensor to cloud with ST Microelectronics and the Arm Pelion IoT platform Jim Carver,
Arm
Learn how to use tools from Arm to connect the ST Microelectronics IoT Discovery kit to Pelion cloud, including the rich set of on board sensors. Attendees will receive a complimentary IoT discovery kit as well as a free developer account for Arm Pelion IoT platform.
